Frequently Asked Questions
About Saladita Surf Rentals

We offer online reservations at Casa Esmeralda and Villas Jacqueline. We started this site and online reservations system to help with the rental problems at Saladita. We work in conjuction with several other booking agents, and the owners, Jaki, Gringo, and Esme.

The calendars here are the calendars used by the property owners. We make every effort to keep them up to date. Even if you make your reservations elsewhere the dates will eventually have to be entered here.

Avoid double bookings and problems during your vacation -- check here for availability and enter your dates here.

There is no better price. The prices and discounts on this site are set by the owners.

Do yourself and all the other travelers to Saladita a favor -- Make your reservations here.

Can I drink the Water

Can I drink the Water?

No -- but each of the rentals has bottled water on hand. The standard in Mexico is to use tap water for household needs. (Many people put a drop of bleach in dish water) Othewise no one drinks tap water. Drinking water comes in large 5 gallon plastic bottles with a dispenser. The drinking water is purified with reverse osmosis filtering and more often than not -- state of the art UV purification.

The household water comes from a nearby well and is probably as clean as anything you get in the US. But don't drink it. You can use it safely for showering, washing, etc. .

Can I Use my Cell Phone

You have a couple options. None of them that good.

ATT or Cingular phones work ok. Be sure to sign up for an international roaming plan -- $0.59 to or from the US. Otherwise your rates per minute are standard $0.99 details

Verizon Phones don't work at Saladita. Or at least mine, a Motorola Triband, doesn't 90% of the time. Which for me is not working. I don't want to walk down the beach and stand in a special place to get my calls.  When you do get service -- say when you drive to Zihuat. International Roaming - Mexico Per Minute Rate Voice Calls are $0.99 per minute.

Mexican Cell Service is good at Saladita. Pay as you go phones are available for about $40 from Movistar and Telcel. I prefer Movistar as it is less expensive and I'm not supporting Carlos Slim. Pay as you go phones usually come with 100 or 200 pesos credit. About 15 pesos a call to the US. Incoming calls are cheaper. The law says incoming calls are free. But that isn't the case. Buy a phone and have your friends in the US call you. The prefix from the US is 011-52-1 and the ten digit number. The extra 1 after the 52 is to desingnate a cell call and your free incoming calls. Right!

TelCel. expensive

Moviestar less expensive.

Renting a Car

Should You rent a car?

If you do, do it stateside or on the web. The prices at the airport are very high. Is that a surprise?

  • Get the insurance and go over the car for dents and dings. Have the agent sign off on any damage.
  • Driving in town is a bit more aggressive than the US.
  • Don't park in no parking zones.
  • Don't drive like you are on a wild and crazy vacation.
  • Don't drive at night. Burros and horses are all over the roads.
  • Assume on the weekend everyone has been drinking.
  • Don't drive fast on the dirt roads unless you are fast at changing flats.

Renting Surf Boards

Can you rent a surf board?

Lourdes has about 20 boards of various lengths and conditions (very few short boards). Her shop is right on the beach at Saladita.

The price is ~US $120 a week.

Remember you aren't going to find your perfect match. And remember these are rental boards.

Catcha La Ola in Ixtapa rents a variety of boards. See the map of Zihuatanejo

Wax has some boards to rent. His place is in los LLanos. See the los LLanos map.

Safety

Is it Safe? Safe in the water or on land?

It is safe both in the water and on land. You need to take precautions like locking up your valuables, locking your rental car, keeping track of your belongings. Of course you would  do that anywhere -- right?!. If you don't have a place to lock things up, consider the trunk of your rental car. Or bring a suitcase with a lock.  I lived out of a tent at Saladita for 10 seasons with all my stuff scattered around like the Beverely Hillbillies and have never had a thing stolen.

What About Bugs?

Saladita is, for the most part, not that buggy. However it is Mexico, tropical and on a sandy beach. Count on finding, or being found by, mosquitos and no-see-ums.  Mosquitos are common to the area during the peak surf season. They are more than common from May through September, but not unbearable.

noseeumNo-see-ums are quite common. The scientific name for the no-see-um is Ceratopogonidae, but is known by the common names: sand flea, sand fly, biting midge, punky and locally, henhenes. They are common to wet areas like beaches, wetlands and creeks. Symtoms of no-see-um bites are red welts that irritate the skin and cause three to four days of severe itching. No-see-ums on the beach will bite most often on the ankles and lower legs. They like the moist sand under the tables in your favorite beach restaurant. If you think you are being bit -- you are -- and need to take action to prevent a reaction.

The first line of defense is insect repellent containing at least 30 percent DEET. Research shows that herbal potions, garlic, vitamin B etc. are ineffective. Put a DEET based insect repellent on in the mornings and evenings. Second, wear pants or socks in the morning and evenings. Be sure to include calomine lotion, Benadryl, or aloe vera in your travel kit.

Every person reacts differently to no-see-um bites. Two people may receive an equal number of bites, and one will not be affected while the other will be covered with small red dots.

Bugs aren't a big problem. But you need to be informed.

When are the Waves the Best?

What is the surf like? When is the surf biggest/smallest/best?

The surf is great!
  • Saladita is a cobble bottom left point. It is oriented to the south but picks up big westerly norths.
  • The Ranch is a cobble bottom left point. It is oriented to the south.
  • Playa Linda is a sand bottom river mouth. Consistent surf

The most consistent surf is May through October. Storms in New Zealand, Australia and Antarctica are the best source of waves for Saladita. Local storms in July and August can adversly affect the swell. Rain will blow out the rivers and cover the beaches with wood and make the water murky. Afternoon surf is rare due to wind.

The surf is smaller in winter. December, January and February are the smallest months, but an occasional swell makes it through.

Most of the locals will agree the best months are April and September.
